Curtail Step

A curtail step is a feature bottom step with one end shaped into a tight spiral or scroll instead of a straight, clean edge or simple curve. The scroll typically wraps around the base of the newel post. These traditional designs are associated with period properties, but can also work well in other formal interiors where decorative features are important.

Our curtail step is available in real oak, supplied unfinished or with a clear lacquer applied. The unfinished option gives you the freedom to stain the step to ensure it matches the rest of your staircase. The lacquered option keeps your curtail step in excellent condition for many years and spares you the need to coat it yourself.

To best care for your new curtail step, dust it with a soft dry cloth every week. Then, for routine cleaning and getting rid of dirt buildups, wipe with a damp cloth and mild wood cleaner. Avoid using too much water and don’t use abrasive products or solvent-based cleaners, as this can damage the natural oak timber. If needed, be sure to reapply lacquer or wood stain, as it can wear away over time in high-traffic areas like your stairs.
