Collection: Baserails

Almost all features of a staircase add strength and stability to the flight, but some are more important than others. Our range of baserails is guaranteed to transform your staircase - creating a flight that will last through thick and thin.

Baserails are a key feature of a staircase. Running up the top of the stair string and continuing along the landing, they add both structure and style to the stairs.

A baserail is a vital part of a staircase’s architecture, too. It supports the spindles when installed on the balustrade, and can hold glass panels securely if they have a groove running through the centre.

The best part is…you can install them yourself!

The installation of a stair baserail is simple. It’s screwed or nailed into the stair string, which is then covered by the spindles. Our contemporary oak baserails are made to fit traditional staircases and come in various lengths, ranging from 1.8m to 4.2m, so you’re guaranteed to find what you need with Stair Crazy.

With us, you can say goodbye to expensive installation services and hello to durable and reliable stair parts.

Home renovations can be pricey, but not with Stair Crazy. We pride ourselves on our competitive pricing that is determined by the size, style, and finish you require - our stair parts can be yours within just 3-5 working days!

Don’t worry if your baserail seems wider than the stair string - this is completely normal and helps support the rest of the staircase. To get the right baserail for your stairs, all you need to do is simply measure the length of your staircase up the angle and along the landing (if you have one). We have a range of standard size baserails for you to browse today.

Stair Crazy understands that not every staircase - or home - is the same. With oak baserails, you’re able to paint and varnish your flight to alter the look so it suits your interior preferences - making it an undeniably versatile staircase part. Use contrasting colours or complementary tones to create a staircase you can be proud of.

We only stock the best of the best here at Stair Crazy. Our range of high-quality oak baserails is available in various styles and lengths to suit your personal tastes in interior design. You can also transform your staircase with our optional clear lacquer, which is available on all of our oak baserails for a small extra cost - simply select your preferred finish before adding it to your cart.

Baserails FAQs

A baserail is what runs up a staircase on the top of the stair string, running along the landing (if there is one). If spindles and panels are being used in a staircase, they’re fixed to the stair baserail, which is then supported by a newel post at either end.

There are a few different types of baserails available:

  • Glass grooves baserails - these have a deep groove to cater for a glass panel.
  • Grooved baserails - this is when a groove runs through the oak baserail, for the spindles to be slotted in. The measurements of the groove are dependent on the spindles and panels used.
  • Un-grooved baserails - as the name suggests, these baserails don’t have any grooves running through the centre. This is when metal spindles or glass brackets/clamps are screwed into the stair baserail.

If you’re unsure which baserail you need, get in touch today on 01942 365 509 and one of our experts will talk you through it.

You can! The best part about our oak staircases is that you can replace the individual parts if they crack, break or warp.

Because of where baserails sit on a staircase (at the bottom of the balustrade), they’re slightly trickier to replace compared to other staircase parts. If you’re looking to replace your oak baserail, it usually includes the removal of other staircase parts, like the spindles.

This is a great opportunity to upgrade your staircase and create a more modern take on traditional staircases. Use your oak baserail as a starting point and add personality using metal spindles or glass panels.

If you are planning on replacing your baserail, it’s advised you go to a professional to prevent further damage. Having a trained expert help you out ensures you get a neat finish to your oak baserail and never have to worry about loose screws or inaccurate measurements.

Like all areas of a staircase, it’s important that baserails are measured accurately. By measuring and positioning your baserail properly, you can be sure that all the other parts will sit correctly.

To measure your stair baserail, start at the bottom of your staircase and carry it up and along the landing (if applicable).

Once you have your measurements, it’s time to start shopping. Here at Stair Crazy, we have the following lengths of oak baserail available: 1.8M, 2.4M, 3.0M, 3.6M and 4.2M. It’s common that you can use one long length of oak baserail to cater for your staircase and landing.

If you’re still unsure and want more information about the best way to measure your baserails, get in touch with us today. Our team is always on hand and happy to pass on their staircase knowledge, so don’t hesitate to ask away (even if you think it’s the simplest of questions).

Our aim at Stair Crazy is to give as many people as possible the chance to update their staircase, with quality stair parts that don’t break the bank. We have a range of sizes and finishes for you to choose from, meaning there’s an option for every style preference and budget.

Like all staircase parts, baserails can be painted and stained in a colour that matches the interior of your home.

In fact, adding paint or varnish can actually prolong the lifespan of your staircase, as it maintains the natural strength of the wood - if done correctly - preventing chips and scratches from appearing over time.

Before altering the colour of your baserail, it’s vital that you sand and clean the oak as much as possible. This removes any oil and old paint to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish.

If you’re buying a baserail with the intention of painting it, make sure to select ‘unfinished’ before adding it to your cart. If you purchase a lacquered baserail, you’ll just be giving yourself more work to do, as you’ll need to do extra sanding to remove the shiny design.

If you’d like to know more about painting a baserail and how to do it properly, send your questions to info@staircrazy.co.uk and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
