What is a solid oak contemporary baserail?

A solid oak contemporary baserail is a horizontal timber rail that runs along the bottom of your balustrade, made from real oak. Spindles or glass panels are installed in it, perfectly pairing with our coordinating Solid Oak Contemporary Handrail for a cohesive look.

Its flat, low-profile shape with clean edges makes it contemporary and ideal for modern, minimalist spaces.

What are the benefits of using oak for baserails?
  • Oak is significantly harder and more durable than most other timbers, resisting impact damage and scuffs in high-traffic areas.
  • The natural grain of oak with its modular rays adds visual interest and character to a wide range of interior styles.
  • Oak is timeless and works well across a range of home aesthetics.
  • A laquared solid oak contemporary baserail protects the surface from dirt and moisture without impacting the appearance of the timber.
What are the different types of baserails available?

The solid oak contemporary baserail is available in four groove styles, so you’re sure to find a design to suit your needs.

There’s ungrooved for decorative use or where spindles are fixed differently, choose between:

  • 10mm groove for glass panels
  • 41mm groove for standard oak spindles
  • 12.5mm groove for metal spindles

Lengths run from 1.0m to 4.2m to suit staircases and balustrades of different dimensions.

Each baserail is available unfinished for on-site finishing or ready-lacquered with a clear coat pre-applied to save you time.

How do I choose the right baserail for my staircase?
  • Match the profile to your handrail - The contemporary baserail pairs well with the Contemporary Handrail. Mixing designs from different ranges can look inconsistent.
  • Choose the groove based on what you are fitting - 41mm for standard oak spindles, 12.5mm for metal spindles, 10mm for glass panels, and ungrooved if spindles will be surface-fixed.
  • Select the baserail length - Measure each section of balustrade between newel posts separately. This gives you the length of baserail needed per section.
  • Choose your finish - If you plan to stain the oak, order unfinished. If you want it ready to install without finishing yourself and want to protect the timber, order the lacquered option.
