5 ways to renovate and refresh your staircase

Our staircases are one of the most important practical features in our homes, and are often standout features of our interior design. Stairs can often take centre stage in our homes and help to enhance the value of our properties too, especially if you take the time to refresh them, if they’re looking worn or dated.

With this in mind, we’ve produced a helpful guide to give you some inspiration when it comes to transforming your staircase and changing up your stair parts.

The best ways to easily upgrade your staircase

  1. Invest in new spindles

A simple yet effective way to enhance your stairs is by swapping out your old spindles, also known as balusters, for brand-new ones.

Not only does this improve the condition of your balustrade, but it can also switch up your interior design and offer a refreshed appearance.

For example, if you currently have a set of classic spindles that have seen better days, replacing them with modern squared balusters that update your space could be a great option if you’re looking to modernise.

  1. Fix creaking treads

Nothing screams your stairs need a refurbishment more than squeaking or creaking stairs, which is dreadful to hear.

Wear and tear, wood shrinkage, and loose parts all contribute to a noisy staircase, so here’s how best to tackle it. If the creaking is caused by loose fittings, you could replace old nails with new ones and add some wood adhesive, too. Or, if your wooden treads are fairly old and are past the point of salvaging, it’s best to invest in new steps that are physically stable and don’t squeak.

  1. Switch to oak stair parts

We appreciate the sheer power and allure of oak here at Stair Crazy, which is why we highly recommend removing old wooden spindles, newel posts, and handrails for brand new ones made from real oak. This timeless timber offers numerous advantages for your staircase.

Firstly, it’s super sturdy and strong, so you won’t need to worry about it being supportive enough for your stairs or wearing quickly.

Plus, it also offers excellent aesthetic appeal with its unique colouring and medullary rays, which bring an element of nature into your home.

  1. Paint your staircase

If you’d rather keep your current stair parts and simply refresh them rather than replace, giving them a paintover could be the answer! .

White paint creates a light feel that’s welcoming and neutral, meaning it will look seamless among any decor. While using black can create contrast that really draws the eye, providing a bolder feel that looks create in modern homes.

Or, why not opt for a subtle duck egg blue to create a calming vibe in your living space? The choice is entirely up to you, so let your creative juices flow and choose a colour scheme that you love.

  1. Add a carpet runner

Carpet runners are an effortless way to revitalise your staircase, elevate the look of your home interior and reduce noise on your stairs.

These additions come in various looks and shades, so you’re guaranteed to find something that ticks all your boxes. Plain and neutral block colours add a subtle enhancement that’s understated and classy. Whereas stripes are eye-catching and help to shake up the appearance of your stairs, especially if you crave an element of style on your staircase.

Whatever you’re looking for, there’s a design for every home style and taste!
